Shiraishi is better known for literary fiction for which he has won many literary awards, including Japan’s prestigious Naoki prize. While most of his books are thoughtful books about love, life and the human condition, he also on occasion writes books for children that convey a poignant message.
Big-Handed Dekkako-Chan, charmingly illustrated by Chika Tanikawa, a Kansai based illustrator and Kobe University graduate, is a tale of a young girl with a super-size left hand and her proud, loving parents who cheer her on.
Is it weird having a big hand? There are actually a lot of advantages in having a super-size hand!
At the core of this 32-page book is a simple message that being different is something special that should be valued and celebrated. And no matter how different you are, even if you are the only large-handed child in kindergarten, for instance, your parents will support and love you all the same.
Reader feedback has been terrific with Big-Handed Dekkako-Chan’s illustrations being dubbed “unbearably cute”- and the tale one that parents should read over and over again with any child struggling to fit in at school for whatever reason. One online reviewer writes that deep parental love protects children, instills a generosity of spirit, and gives a child the courage to confront society – an important and powerful message that is eloquently reiterated by this remarkable book.
Big-Handed Dekako-Chan was published 31 August in Japanese by Iwasaki Shoten. More information in Japanese about the book is available here.
